How to Protect Your SMD LEDs from Moisture Damage
At Yuliang LED, we understand that moisture can be a major threat to the performance and lifespan of SMD LEDs. Here's a simple guide to help you prevent moisture-related issues and ensure your LEDs last longer.
Why Moisture Hurts SMD LEDs

SMD LEDs can absorb moisture from the air. During soldering or outdoor use, this trapped moisture expands, causing internal stress that can break wire connections or corrode electrodes. This leads to failures like dimming, flickering, or dead LEDs.

Key Moisture-Prevention Tips
1. Storage Matters
Keep unopened LEDs in their original moisture-proof bags.
Store in a cool, dry place (below 30°C, under 60% humidity).
Use within 30 days for RGB LEDs and 60 days for white LEDs.
For long-term storage (over 6 months), dry the LEDs in an oven before use.
2. After Opening the Package
Plan your usage: try to use opened LEDs within 24 hours.
Reseal any unused LEDs in a vacuum bag and store them in a dry cabinet or oven.
3. During Installation (SMT Process)
Control your workshop environment: keep temperature <30°C and humidity <60% RH.
Always follow anti-static measures: use grounded wristbands and equipment.
4. For Outdoor or Infrequently Used LEDs
If LEDs won't be used for a long time (e.g., in seasonal lighting), moisture can seep in. To prevent damage:
When restarting, first power them at a very low current (<5mA) for 7 days to gently dry out internal moisture.
Gradually increase to the normal current after this conditioning period.
